Characteristics of MDF:
Acoustic performance is stable, easy to process and shape, convenient for surface treatment, and comes at a moderate cost. However, it has poor moisture resistance and is relatively heavy.
Overall, MDF has become a popular material for professional speaker cabinets thanks to its stable acoustic performance and ease of processing—but when using it, it’s important to address moisture resistance and weight issues specifically.
Splint features:
It has high structural strength, superior moisture resistance compared to MDF, a relatively moderate weight, unique resonance characteristics, slightly weaker acoustic uniformity, higher processing costs, and marginally lower surface smoothness.
Overall, plywood is better suited for professional speakers with high demands on structural strength and moisture resistance—such as outdoor performance cabinets or heavy-duty monitoring boxes—but careful craftsmanship is needed to address any shortcomings in acoustic uniformity.
